Mayra and I ate dinner at home last night, then we went out for dessert. We went to see the Chiriqui Players dress rehearsal for Bench Warmers. Bench Warmers, stars a park bench and serves up six courses of Tapas. We had six different tidbits for an intellectual desert. We actually needed to leave at intermission. I did not want to leave but Mayra had to be at work early today. Before we left we did savor drama and comedy, passion and curiosity, different flavors all centered around and silent but omnipresent park bench.
The concept of Bench Warmers is to give local people theatrical expression. Most of the playlets were written and directed by your neighbors. All the talent on the stage are your neighbors and many are shiny new faces. Jim Hatch has an ability to find local talent and refine it. In this series of appetizers he allows others to dip their toes into the waters of writing, directing and acting. We are very fortunate that Boquete seems to have a deep well of talented people.
As with any assortment of flavors some were sweet, others bitter, still others savory and enticing. Sandi Stevens as a demonic character in contrast to the angelic Narin Kennedy. Phyllis McNaughton, my neighbor, performed a part that was written for her. In fact she wrote if for herself and no one else I know could have filled the role. This playlet had the flavor of bittersweet comedy.
One of the great additions to our community is Boquetes theater. Aside from Panama City you will not find local theater with local talent, expending so much energy to entertain the community. We, the community need to support or neighbors as they grow, develop new talents and entertain us with their efforts.
When you go to this play do not expect the same consistant performances of the other Chiriqui Players productions, by definition Tapas is an assortment and Bench Warmers is exactly that, a smorgasbord, some pieces better than others, some will make you smile, others will make you laugh, some might provoke other emotions.
There is a reason the Spanish have Tapas, the Swedish have a Smorgasbord and the Chinese have Dim Sum, it is to allow the chefs expression in small portions and the diner to have tastes of different flavors. When you enjoy Bench Warmers you will experience the same concept entertaining your cranial synapses.
Bench Warmers has only four performances. Starting tonight Thursday June 16 through Saturday June 18 at 7:30 PM and Sunday June 19 at 2 PM. All performances are the BCP theater and each flavor presented is more entertaining than most of the Tuesday Morning speakers in the same venue.
