Prior good acts, more people to be applauded

When school started this year Mayra was moved from Palmira here in Boquete, to a larger school, Loma Colorada in David. Loma Colorada is located in a red zone, a place considered unsafe and rife with poverty. The school has over seven hundred students man of whom go to school hungry and many of whom come from families that could not provide the basics. Since students in Panama need uniforms for school Mayra identified a group that needs some of the basics. They either had none or had one short, one pair of pants and or no shoes or socks.

Ken and Pattie Thompson, Boquete expats, offered to help and they and the Boquete Bible Fellowship helped provide uniforms and some shoes for thirty two students. Mayra and I added more and finally this past week she was granted permission to distribute the clothes.

Mayra and all those students would like to thank Ken and Pattie and all those who contributed for their help. There are new challenges, in the past Loma Colorada received food from the government to feed their students, this year, none. We are exploring how to help feed those students who are from the poorest families. If you have an idea how to help please let us know.

Here are some photos of the students with their new uniforms.

Good job by the Thompsons and others….
I have a question in the back of my mind though….why so much plastic? wrappings etc…is it necessary because of moisture, mold etc? or would it be better to use paper, which wont clog up in land fills etc?

  2. Hi Lee,
Ran across your blog while doing research on the Boquete area. Reading this entry about the uniform donations was SO heartwarming, as my husband and I are educators here in the U.S. We both have a heart for kids. My former school was a very low-income school, but what these kids in David are faced with is far more challenging than what kids at my former school dealt with. Kids in the U.S. are so fortunate to be able to get their needs met with all of the breakfast/lunch programs, public assistance, bussing, etc. Bravo to you and the expats in your area for reaching out and making a difference for so many kids!

Heading to Panama in August to visit and decide whether the expat life in Panama might be for us. We’ll be in Volcan but plan to visit Boquete and the surrounding area. Perhaps our paths will cross!

  3. Bjorn, everything is from China and everything comes wrapped in plastic.

  4. Qué gesto tan hermoso de parte de ustedes hacia los estudiantes de esa escuela. Muchas gracias.

A huge GRACIAS to Lee for posting the pics of the children, especially the young man, who was not wearing one, receiving his new shoes and uniform. We had thought the project was for 50 children, but mentioned above, it was for 32? I do hope there were enough to go around for all the children needing them.

I am so glad those kids received their uniforms. Shoes don’t usually last more than 2 months around here, due to the walking in the rain that they have to do on a daily basis. Thank you so much for sharing this picture. I hope others will see this huge need and will help. God bless you for what your are doing for these people.
