The rule of law, or lack of the same

Today I was sent this video about still another project this time being built by Panamanians that is ignoring environmental laws to destroy a forest area in Boquete.

The following was the message sent with the video.

“LAS HUACAS BOQUETE DESTRUCTION OF TROPICAL HUMID MOUNTAINOUS CLOUD FOREST:
Video shows the destruction and cutting down of the tropical forest at Las Huacas, Jaramillo Abajo, Boquete, Chiriqui, Panama, by David Ochi and his group of Transcaribe Trading S.A.  This area is the only green pocket left in this area that has habitatS for several wild-life mountainous tropical species of animals and plants.  The Government of Panama and ANAM Authority of the Environment have given permission to devastate the forest.  The area being cut by ax is to keep it silent as they do not have permission to clear-cut this area.  Workers of this Real Estate Development hunted and killed a tapir (endangered species) and ate it among themselves.  They are criminals.  Boquete DOES NOT WANT THIS PROJECT of annihilation of nature and poor defenseless animals.  This depredation of nature is to make way for a 5 star hotel and million dollar houses.  This is not development but destruction.  Please do not invest here.  Help us stop this project. ”

There is another message to those who can legally act in Panamanian politics. You have the laws, you have the agencies, you need to force your government to enforce the laws that protect environment and people from destruction. We expats have no vote, we have no voice other than the power of the money we spend here in Panama. You, the Panamanians need to force your government to forsake greed and enforce your laws.

My opinion is best sung by Joni Mitchell a long time ago in  place  far away.

In this area of Las Huacas, in Jaramillo Abajo, Boquete, there are 900 hectares of habitat for wildlife like monkeys, birds, insects, snakes, wild hugs, tapirs, puma, rabbits, ñeques, migratory birds and butterflies. It is a natural sanctuary for animal and plant species. The area is part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor and it is inside the La Amistad Biosphere Reserve, evenmore belongs to the Rio Caldera Hydrographic Basin. Please help stop this real estate development. We want to keep Boquete green. Everyone can help by sending messages to potential foreign investors NOT to sponsor these types of projects and NOT to promote the future 5 star hotel.

  5. Disgusting:( But Not Surprised……They will keep selling and destroying until the last tree:(
