Feliz Año – Happy Year

Posted by Lee on January 2, 2010

At midnight New Years eve the skies exploded with Fireworks and people walked around greeting each other with “feliz año” not happy new year. I was invited to David for a New Years party, having no other plans I went. It was a culturally different experience for me.

The men drank, lit fireworks and drank some more. The woman tried Karaoke indoors. I preferred the drinking and fireworks. In all the celebration gave me some time for reflection.

Normally the rebirth, resurrection story goes with Spring, the planting season. For me this New Years Eve the first in some time where i was not traveling or surrounded by family, it gave me pause.

For more than thirty years New Years eve was a time of quiet preparation for another year. It was also my wedding anniversary, not something often celebrated in my life. Most New Years eves were spent at home and rarely did I make it to midnight awake.

My rebirth in Boquete Panama seems to have given me a fresh perspective. I not only made it until midnight to share Feliz Año with many people I never met before, but also managed to last until 3 am before collapsing, sober and happy.

Panama has provided me a new life, a new opportunity. Because of my transition to Panama I really have been resurrected. Like a Phoenix from the ashes I have risen and look forward to a new year of new discoveries.

Well congratulations on all fronts. here’s hoping you will continue to spout the truth about life abroad, unlike those sheisters at IL. I am still contemplating a scouting trip to Panama, but now I have a more honest version of reality thanks to your blog and others. So to you I say,Gracias y Feliz Ano Nuevo.
