Dia del Madre, Boquete Panama
Posted by Lee on December 7, 2009
Tomorrow December 8 is Mothers Day in Panama. Boquete Panama started celebrating yesterday, a Sunday before.
Mothers Day is not a trivial event in Panama. It is an official holiday so many people have the day off from work. It is a day of celebrating life as given from mother to child and although very much a consumer holiday it is also a family day.
At the Good Kitchen of Alto Jaramillo the community celebrated yesterday.

Only woman were allowed seating, every mother there received a meal, drink, gift and a warm thank you from the collective community.
They were also entertained by at least two musical groups, one folk and mariachis from David.

I know these Mariachis came from David because they never stopped commenting on how cold it was on Jaramillo and wore mufflers around their throats.
I left near sundown and things were still going strong. The next big event on Jaramillo is for New Years Day and I am still looking for volunteers who want to cook chili!!

Lee: Muy bonita la celebración del Día de la Madre en Jaramillo. Gracias por las fotos y felicitaciones a todas las madres!
FYI Panama is the only country in the world that celebrates mother’s day on the 8th of December. The 8th of December is “The Inmaculate Conception ” day. The Immaculate Conception is, according to Roman Catholic Dogma, the conception of the Virgin Mary without any stain (macula in Latin) of original sin. It is one of the four dogmas in Roman Catholic Mariology. Under this aspect Mary is sometimes called the Immaculata (the Immaculate One), particularly in artistic contexts.(Wikipedia) I couldn’t think of a better date to celebrate it.
Today in Kansas City where I work and live we are celebrating Mother’s Day. Maria and I have been married for 21 years and have three sons. It’s a big day and tradition for us here. I met and Married my lovely Maria in Panama and know how special this day is for her. Panama is always near and dear to our hearts.
With Utmost Respect especially to the Mothers of Panama.
Muy Feliz Dia de las Madres.
Siempre Fiel, Hank
I am famous for my chili con carne, just contact me and I will send the recipe, to be used once please.
Hi Lee
I don’t see any indigenous women in the picture. Are they not integrated into the collective community?
Penny
Penny there were many, many indigenous women there. Just not obvious from the photo.
i wanted to enlighten you as to how look at the world,,,,,, have you ever try to intergrate yourself into the the indigenous collective community? it always helps when you can feel what the other person feels. peace
