Restaurante Renegado in David

Saturday required a road trip from Boquete Panama to the provincial capital in David Panama. Road trips consume copious amounts of energy and in addition to paying the ridiculous $4.53 a gallon for diesel fuel my new friend Hand and I needed to refuel ourselves too.

Hand did some simple analysis and determined a good meal was warranted and we selected the Restaurant Renegado which is located on the Interamerican Highway.

Hand has an affinity to things dark, since it’s supporting role in the Adams Family Television series had a long term influence, so we decided to try the Paella Arroz Negro, a savory blend of seafood and rice cooked with squid ink. The dish was served with a garlic laden aoli and despite the fact we were drinking beer the chef brought us some Sauvigonon Blanc wine to provide an enhanced taste experience. Hand was gracious enough to pose for a photo dishing out the Paella, it think the wine encouraged it.

Hand declared the Paella the best it had tried since playing a role in the South of France. The service was excellent, the food divine and the $9 a person for a Paella very reasonable.

If you decide you need a refueling in David Hand and I both recommend the Renegado and their savory Paella.

The Port of David, Pedregal

Just south of Boquete is the megalopolis of David, Panama. About 100,000 people life in the David area, the largest city in Panama west of Panama City. To the mountain dwellers of Boquete, David is hot, dry and full of good things to buy.

However if you drive down the airport road past the airport until it ends you can discover Stellas restaurant anf the Port of David. It is worth the trip for a nice lunch and view of boats sailing into the estuary.

Stella’s Marina Restaurante  has both a nice menu and presentation. Specials are written on the white board.

And the sign is hard to miss after you drive into the marina.  Panama, Boquete, Boquete panama, David, Pedregal, StellasWe will return to Stella’s and the other sea food restaurants in Pedregal soon, you should try them also.

A mobile feast on the road from David to Boquete

I had my task list and a wife without enough energy to face another day driving from Boquete to David. The tasks were routine and because they were we knew the few tasks would take all day.

Our Rexton 290 requires TLC and at least an oil change every 5,000 KM. I have worked on various ways to schedule this so it does not take all day. The first theory was get it in at 8am so it would be done by noon, wrong it was done at 4pm. Slowly I scheduled it later and later and it was always done about 4pm. Today I went for 1:30pm and magically time folded and it was done at 4pm. Lesson learned, next time I will try 3pm.

To fill the time I usually walk. Today without Jennifer, I let my stomach take control. First a spot just behind Super Baru recommended some time ago by Don Ray at Chiriqui Chatter.

110807a.jpg

I recalled Don Ray mentioning that some days they have chicharron (fried pig skin), not something I usually enjoy but I decided to give it a try. I got lucky!

110807b.jpg

They had them, soon I had some and they where something wonderful. Crunchy, moist and oozing with savoury goodness. Yum great high fat, high calorie artery hardening marching food so on I marched.

A few blocks down the street I spied a Chinese Restaurant I had never noticed. Walking really helps to absorb the sights.

110807f.jpg

I decided to check it out. We have been sadly disappointed in our last two meals at the Chinese Steakhouse so I figured I would do some advance work.

I ordered a Sopa Wonton chica, a small wanton soup, $2.

110807j.jpg

It was excellent. I am not sure why all the soups here are loaded with noodles, this one included. Despite the noodles the soup was good enough to justify a return.

When I exited the restaurant the skies had opened and the rain was torrential. After a wait I took a taxi back and picked up my car. I was amazed to see a routine oil change had gone up 50% in 3 months, all increase in oil prices, yikes.

On my trip up the hill I noticed a long vacant building just north of Mercado Lily has a sign.

110807c.jpg

This this was culinary investigation day I stopped. Noticed this in the parking lot and quickly understood the cuisine.

110807e.jpg

$6 for a whole chicken spit broiled. Not wood smoked as in David but good enough to want one. Alas there were none ready for travel and I was not ready to watch them spin for 45 minutes.

I drove on and spotted Pasteleria Aleman was open.

110807g.jpg

I walked up to the window and ordered some Chilean Empanadas and Carrot Bread to go.

I love a movable feast!

Restaurant Preview – Mr Cheng in David

Mr Chen is almost directly across from McDonalds in David.

mrchen.jpg

What’s the rush on writing about them? They just opened.  Jennifer has noted a culinary deliemma eating in this region. Chiriqui is the vegetable basket of Panama but the local diet does not use them. Typico Panamanian food is a meat of some type with white rice, patacones, fried potatoes or beans. Jennifer needs green in her food, she is a bit of a nutritional expert and is trying to keep me alive through improved cuisine; a challenge indeed. Hence this prereview.

We stopped at Mr Chen to check it out and we had no expectations, we were surprised.

mrchen3.jpg

Behind this door is a nice new restaurant with a simple inexpensive menu and a bakery.

mrchen1.jpg

Try the Pollo con hoja de mostaza, Chicken breast with mustard greens in a simple clear sauce. Truely wonderful, simple and loaded with all the good things greens have as well as the low fat protein of chicken breast, it alone could have fed both of us for $5 but we did not know how large the portion would be.

mrchen4.jpg

Or try this one, Corvina y Brocolli. Where can you get a plate like this for $5? Brocolli and fresh sea bass again in the same simple sauce, again enough for two people on one plate. The brocolli was turning yellow, a sign of end of life but it was still excellent.

mrchen5.jpg

Our Entrada came last, poor timing because I expected the Shu Mai from the frozen section of El Rey, I am pleased to say I was wrong. These were excellent, in fact I ate three before I remembered the camera. Alone these at $3.75 could be a full but not very green meal.

We will return to Mr Chen, try more a write a review in depth after a few more meals.

They only provided a 10% discount on the Jubilado card but the value was excellent and we took a lot of food home.

MultiCafe in David Panama

It is difficult to live in Boquete and not include David in your life. For us a weekly trip from Boquete to David is the norm. Boquete is an island. David is where the real world of shopping, hospitals, our dentist and normal Panama culture exists. In Boquete you can get by with English, in David you really need some Spanish. In Boquete you can find many things that have evolved to entertain the ex-pat culture, in David you will find the culture of Panama.

Multi-cafe in David is a wonderful example of true Panama cuisine.

Multicafe

It is not the hibrow of Panama City but a cleaned up version of typico Panamaneo. A cafeteria that has a wide selection of dishes that can always include some type of chicken, beef or pork with rice, Patacones, potatoes or beans.

minicafe2.jpg

Lots of other dishes hove found themselves into the cuisine, pasta is common and fried or stewed to death are the operative cooking methods.

minicafe3.jpg

Panama is laden with wonderful fresh hormone and antibiotic free foods. Many restaurants are doing very creative things with those ingredients. But if you want to try the meat potatoes cuisine of Panama and are in David I recommend the Multi-Cafe, there are two both close to Parque Cervantes. Prices are low, the food is wholesome and the facility shining and well maintained.

Gran Hotel Nacional – David, Panama

On our first trip to Boquete we elected to drive from Panama City. Our goal was to make it to David in one day, due to road construction and rain we did, but barely. When we arrived in David it was late we sought out a hotel and discovered the Gran Hotel Nacional.
gnaticonal.jpg
The hotel is nice, upscale for David and well maintained. I have since been told the hotel was built for the United Fruit Company as a place for visiting executives.
gnational2.jpg
The manager, a Swiss Expat named Paul was very helpful in making our one night stay smooth.

My daughter loved the Hotel Casino, she was able to play nickel slots and savored the I am an adult experience.

Jennifer and I went back this week to have lunch and arrived too early. The luncheon buffet was not yet available.
gnational9.jpg

so we asked for the breakfast menu
gnational7.jpg
Breakfast is reasonably priced for a hotel and the food well done.

On our first trip we had dinner in the Barbacoa, a nice bar in the courtyard with your meal prepared on a barbecue as you enjoy a drink.

I didn’t take any pictures back then but here is the menu.
gnaticional3.jpg
Not the least expensive food in David but well prepared in a relaxing environment.

It is unlikely I would stay in the Gran Nacional Hotel today, it is expensive at about $54.00 (less than a Motel Six but this is Panama) and I prefer the Alcala but for a first taste of David it is worth a night and the food is very good and again a comfortable transition for a new arrival.

Good Pizza in David- Tamburrelli

Don’t call Dominos; yes they are in David. You could call Napoli in Panama City, it’s toll free; but I don’t think they will deliver so next best option is Tamurrelli Country.
tamburrelli.jpg
They have a full menu, lot’s of salads, seafood and very good reasonably priced Pizza.
tamburelli2.jpg

Cafe Don Sui – David

We have written about three different Chinese Restaurants we discovered in David; we would rank them Chinese Steakhouse, Palacio Oriental and Hong Kong.

In response to our reviews several people in David recommended we try Cafe Don Sui in the Panama Rey Hotel. It’s easy to find. Starting at the KFC at the Interamerican Hwy turn left and drive into David until you are forced to turn right on Avienda Simon Bolivar. Make the turn and drive past the town square and soon on your left you will see the Panama Rey a tall white building on your left.

donsui1.jpg

We arrived at 1:30 and the place was empty, the staff was very helpful and made suggestions.

Jennifer was feeling green and I was feeling spicey.

Lunch included chicken soup, tea and the entree. Cost $3.50.

Usually we do not write about a resaurant the first time we visit but since we likely will not be returning it is appropriate.

The soup was loaded with chicken, scallions, napa cabbage and had absolutely no taste.

donsui2.jpg

Jennifer had the Vegatales Panama Rey, they were supposed to be fresh vegtables, they were a mixture of fresh vegtables and canned mushrooms and totally overcooked into another world.

donsui3.jpg

Mine was a little better, Szechuan beef, the meat was good, the vegetables not steamed to death but not worth a repeat visit.

In all Cafe Don Sui is now number four on our list. I doubt we will return unless someone explains what we did wrong.

Rico Pollo – David

I was reading how the push to create ethanol from corn in the US is pushing corn prices up. It’s also not saving oil since they need so much petroleum based fertilizer to grow corn, but it is raising the cost of chicken feed in Panama. Panama imports most of it’s chicken feed from the US and Panamaneos feed on chickens.
pollorica.jpg

Rico Pollo is directly across the street from McDonalds in David and a far better value and far better tasting, except maybe for the sausage.

pollorica1.jpg

Pollo Lena, Rotisserie chicken, cooked over a wood fire in the front windows.

pollorica3.jpg

The menu is about as simple as it gets and for under $2 you can have lunch.

pollorica2.jpg

MY lunch, not yours. It was wonderful Pollo Lena and Yucca a local favorite and I will return. I do confess I never did check the rest rooms; next time.

McDonalds David

OMG I must be going over the edge to write something good about that McDonalds, yes the one with the Golden Arches. I read a Post on Chiriqui Chatter about sausage at Mickey D’s and my mouth began to water.
mcdonalds.jpg

I succumb to the temptation and had a sausage Mcmuffin at McDonalds, it was wonderful. I thought I had better taste but it really did taste great.

Now here is my 20,000/B question. Two things that cost less in Panama than the US are labor and food. Why are McDonalds prices so high and why do so many locals eat there?
