Searching for a sea mans lunch in David? Sedimar might be perfect

Questing for good seafood? I often look for a place to eat in David and am surprised David does not have a larger number of Seafood restaurants. Mayra’s daughter Karina works for the Maritime Authority and is based in Pedregal. I asked her were she and her workmates go for lunch. The answer Sedimar. We decided to visit Sedimar and see why.

To get to Sedimar drive to the airport in David and keep going into Pedregal. This is a spot for lunch, Pedregal is considered a Red Zone, not safe at night. Before you get to the port where the road ends you will see Sedimar on your left side. It is worth stop is you are hungry and want fresh seafood at reasonable prices. This is a Sea Food greasy spoon, not Red Lobster not elegant, good food, reasonable prices and no atmosphere.

Our lunch is pictured below, we ordered one order of Arroz a la Marinara. It cost $9.50 and two of use surrendered before finishing the plate. Yes that really is crab on the pile of rice and seafood. Think enhanced Paella.

Christmas dining

As we approach Christmas I have been barraged by restaurants in Boquete offering Christmas dinners for prices from $24.95 up, most have the fine print that this is a special price not subject to the 25% jubilado discount. I never fault the restauranteurs, they need to earn a living but I want to share an option.

As several people in Boquete have discovered the restaurant in the Hotel Ciudad de David has an excellent buffet lunch. They are doing an enhanced holiday buffet until New Years Eve. Mayra and I stopped by Friday and enjoyed the fare.

Hotel Ciudad David

Salad Bar is excellent

The entrees included pasta with shrimp, beef overcooked (This is Panama) in wine and excellent Turkey with lots of rice.

All this topped off with dessert from a too good to pass up selection.

Made for a smiling Mayra.

I am not suggesting that you abandon Boquete for David but if you are in David any afternoon you should try the restaurant in the Hotel Ciudad David, they have parking in the building and good eats in the restaurant. The cost for holiday spread is $16 plus tax less the Jubilado discount, normally the price is $12. Still for half the price of the Boquete offerings you can enjoy an elegant Panamanian Christmas meal.

Ciudad de David, lunch worth a trip

I listened to some legal advice, my lawyer said try lunch at the Ciudad de David, he was right.

20120817-124713.jpg

I can now recommend three high quality restaurants for lunch in David. Add the Hotel Ciudad David to the list that was Mosto Bistro and Cuatro. What makes it different is that Hotel Ciudad David is a high quality buffet. You can enjoy salads, soup, a choice or all of several entrees and desert, with a beverage. Today they had green salad, seafood salad, salad Nicoise, bean soup with ham, grouper, chicken cordon blu, chicken lasagna and toxic deserts.

Lunch Buffet Hotel Ciudad David

David is evolving, there are now restaurants far beyond the typicos. Yes you can still have lunch for $2.75 in numerous place but if you want more than Arroz con Pollo, (Chicken and Rice) there are an increasing number of options. I rarely eat in a typico, more often Chinese or pollo a lena (wood roasted chicken)  but for a treat I am finding myself enjoying better food, better service and more relaxing atmosphere.

You do pay for quality, it is $12 less the jubilado discount plus tax, $9.63 total and well worth it for a relaxing hour

Back to School on Monday

I realize most expats in Boquete are not watching closely but school starts on Monday. This week families around the country are buying notebooks, uniforms and the other essentials. The government has a published request out to purchase thousands of laptops for students  as Panama continues to move forward on some fronts. So watch for students and more yellow vans prowling the streets on Monday.

One part of the country not preparing for back to school is the Ngobe Bugle comarca. Silva Carrera announced yesterday, that the Comarca will not send it’s children back to school until things are resolved with the government. She said she was concerned for the safety of both children and teachers. One more in a series of moves showing alienation from the national government.

I have been beautiful, scalding, David for a couple of days as Mayra gets ready to return to a classroom in David and I had some return work done on my car.

Three weeks ago the road from the Wilson Bridge up Jaramillo managed to punch a hole in my diesel tank as it descended on some trivial road debris. We were referred to Taller Rodriguez on Calle E Sur for a repair. Sr. Rodriguez did the repair and within two weeks it was leaking again. I thought, another new leak, no, same old leak, bad weld.

Yesterday they pulled the tank, confirmed the weld was bad and redid it. I was fully expecting to have to debate the concept of warranty. There was no debate, nor was there a charge. If the weld holds this time I can recommend the quality of workmanship, either way I can say Sr. Javier Rodreguiz is an honorable man.

Don Chalo David Panama

Don Chalo David Panama

One final note, not a restaurant review, but a location worth mentioning for those leaving Price Smart and seeking fresh seafood. We eat at Don Chalo often so I do want to share.  Don Chalo is in the Los Angeles area and has been there for years. The get there from Price Smart, ride the Interamerican until you pass the first Delta station (was Shell) make a soft right, then at the next street make a right, proceed to the T at the end of the street and make another right. Don Chalo will be on your left in less than 100 meters. Don’t expect to find any expats there, the menu is on a white board and changes with availability and the food is simple and fresh; the beer is always cold.

If you are famished try a fried fish, a whole fish. If you just need some fuel before the hill climb try their excellent ceviche. You will not be disappointed, they take cash,  so you can leave the American Express at home.

A Foodie Quickie: Pizza Pit Mall in David, not a place for Vegans

It is not often I toss in a food quickie, but I read about the Pizza Pit in Chiriqui Mall in a Yahoo group, Gringos in David. I ended up in Chiriqui Mall this week and then hunger struck as did my total recall. The Pizza Pit Mall is located in the food court right across from Super Baru and was easy to find.

The post in the Yahoo group said try the Cheese Steak, since I do lust a good cheese Steak, I did.

Cheese Steak

Cheese Steak

It looked like a the real thing, it was excellent. A real Cheese Steak in David for $3.99. I spoke with Patricia, the owner. They have only been open two weeks and she is hoping people find out about the place.

The hours are Monday – Saturday Noon – 9pm and Sunday 1PM – 8:30PM

I am motivated to convince you to give them a try. My interest is simple, this is the best Cheese Steak I have eaten since my last time in Philadelphia and I want them to stay open and keep on cooking. So vegans beware the best thing about Philadelphia next to the soft pretzel has made it to Chiriqui Mall in David Panama.

Graduation and a surprise in David, Restaurante Cuatro

[GTranslate]
Mixing a discussion of food and higher education in Panama might not be stomach settling to everyone. From what little I have seen of private University education here, I am not impressed. Still, Friday night was a long awaited event, graduation from UDI in David for Mayra’s youngest daughter and we went along with Mayra’s Parents and Johana.

Karina, Mayra and grandparents

Karina has a degree in Maritime business, she and fourteen peers in her graduating class. She is lucky, she has a job for the Port of Pedregal, she is now one of four inspectors of boats there. Her peers, I suspect they will either need to relocate to the Capital or flip burgers because she is the only one who has gotten a career path job.

To celebrate I thought McDonalds was appropriate, but I was overruled, and we made our second trip to Cuatro in David. I had planned a full review of Cuatro when I was told they would be opening in Boquete. They did have a sign up at new building, the sign is gone and so are their plans to open in Boquete. Still, since we have eaten there twice I do want to write  about them.

Name: Restaurante Cuatro

Our first visit was August 20th. Cuatro was recommended by Don, Becky and Joe Kimm, when they recommend I listen. We went for dinner with Mayra, Katrina and my daughter, Paige as she was leaving town. This time on Friday Sept 9 at about 8:30pm with eight people.

The first time I was appropriately amazed to find service, food and quality better than anyplace else in David. The second time I was also impressed. Cuatro the best I have found for the total dining experience in David.

Location: In David, Dolegita area, on the street that runs from the east side of Super Baru before it intersects at the Delta Station before Romeros. Look to your left if coming from Boquete.

Hours:

Short Description of the food: The best description is to call Cuatro a fusion of local ingredients into a uniquely different cuisine; something very refreshing.

Ambiance: Intimate, the restaurant is divided into several areas for dining. We were a room away from the owners of Ciudad David Hotel, also enjoying dinner and I could not hear a word of their conversations. I find it very a comfortable place for a meal with conversation.

Price: The menu is posted below but overall prices are in the $12- $14 range for beautifully prepared and presented culinary art. Appetizers are about $5

Bacon wrapped Trout stuffed with lobster $10.00

Red Snapper in a shrimp sauce $12.50

Plantain crusted corvina, on a bed of mashed Otoe $12.50

Coffee rubbed beef tenderloin over a pure of squash $13

I found this one dish disappointing because I read the menu in Spanish and expected coffee rubbed filite similar to Las Ruinas. I was service tenderloin, which was there, in English, not filite.

The food speaks for itself and without exception everyone enjoyed their meals, me too. Despite not being filite the tenderoin was excellent.

Bathrooms: New, clean and complete 5/5

Kitchen Cleanliness: beautiful and viable if you wish to see, very clean.

Kitchen

Service: On the first trip the service was five star, a waiter hovering filling water glasses as soon as they were touched. The second trip found the ratio of staff to clients down and service still excellent but not equal. They were very crowded and that needs to be taken into consideration.

Jubilado Discount: On the first trip I did not ask, I the second I asked for three discounts, myself and Mayra’s parents. The waiter asked for identification and I said it was clear Mayra’s parents were jubilados and offered my id. He said without proof they would not provide the discount. I waived the discount, I understand their position.

Summary: Cuarto is without no exception the best restaurant I have eaten at in David. It has the best food, the best atmosphere and best service. I will return and I would recommend it to anyone visiting David. I do not know if the have a different menu for lunch.

Menu:

Bolo Bolo David Panama

When I received this invitation I had fantasies of singing and dancing in the Airport in David. My memories of all things Hari Kristna are bit surreal, still Myra and I went to check out the opening of Bolo Bolo in David.

We watched the chanting, watched the dancing, watched the ribbon cutting and sampled some food. Most of those in attendance seemed to be enjoying the food, based upon the rate of consumption. For me unfortunately the food was not to my taste. I would have preferred some fried chicken and a cold beer.
BoloBolo03.jpg

I hoped to see Indian Food, vegetarian, but Indian food. What they offer is precious little. In studying the white board menu I saw little to suggest India, total to suggest both vegetarian, not vegan and the reality of the market in David Panama.

I really wish the owners well. They are located near Immigration in David and if you are looking for a vegetarian option please stop over and give them a try.

Manas in David Panama

Today, November 28th begins three days intense partying in Boquete Panama. Today is independence day and the President of the Republic of Panama is coming to Boquete along with throngs of people intent on a good time. Still I am going to post about a restaurant in David Panama. When I recover from the celebration I will write about it.

Mana is a quant local in David easy to find and worth the effort. To get there you need to drive on the east side of Super Baru and turn left at Java Juice. About 100 meters down the road on the left side you will spot this sign.ManaDavidPanama0003.jpg

Why Mana worth the effort? Most people from Boquete drive to David regularly and we often stop for lunch or dinner. Mana is a perfect stop, great food and low prices, not a typico but a restaurant with a nice menu and excellent preparation. The menu photo may not be clear enough to read but below is our dinner check it will speak for itself on the prices.
ManaDavidPanama0004.jpg

Prices aside I was shocked at the both the quality and portions. We ordered salads and expected small dinner salads for $2, Wrong.
ManaDavidPanama0005.jpg

The salad was a meal. I could not finish it and my entree. A way too large fried corvina for $5.
ManaDavidPanama0007.jpg
My dinner partner wanted to try langostinos, large shrimp. I was shocked at this plate for $5.
ManaDavidPanama0008.jpg

The owners are bilingual, the food cross cultural, the ambiance simple but pleasurable. We were both impressed. The current cliental is largely expats but the menu and pricing is affordable to the broad spectrum of Davidians also.
ManaDavidPanama0009.jpg

Four Heinekens, two salads, two entrees for under $21. I doubt you could find this quality and price in Boquete or Panama City, forget any place in the US or Canada or England or ….

Ying and Yang in Alto Boquete Panama

I have written about it before, the changing economic face of Boquete Panama but I fear I must seize the moment and reiterate.

As you drive out of Bajo Boquete toward David you will pass the new El Dorado center. What was previously a MiniSuper and hardware store now has a new Chinese restaurant, Ying’s yingandyang001.jpg

yingandyang010.jpg

and a New Panamanian Tipico, Dorado Park. Dorado Park is owned and operated by the same people who deliver my favorite breakfast and a great lunch value at Central Park in Bajo Boquete, call them Yang.

Here in one little center featuring two little restaurants is the contrast happening in Boquete. Dorado Park, Yang, is where an average Panamanian can afford to eat a quality meal in a pleasant but un-extraordinary environment and the other Ying, a restaurant targeted at the Gringo population.

Ying’s is beautiful inside.
yingandyang008.jpg
Dorado Park is simple.

Yings has a menu that would be reasonable in North America.
yingandyang004.jpg

Dorado Park has a menu that is reasonable in Panama.
yingandyang002.jpg

There is the Ying and Yang of the dilemma. In David there are several good Chinese restaurants, typical is the Nueva China where you can get a nice bowl of WonTon Soup for $2.

110807j.jpg

This is the $2 WonTon Chica from Nueva China above. The WonTon for $5.50 from Ying’s is below.yingandyang011.jpg

Both use the same technique of adding lots of noodles into the soup to make then appear to be overloaded with meat, wontons and vegetables.yingandyang007.jpg
$3 for a pot of Tea? It is $1 in David and free at the Golden Unicorn in Panama City, a far better restaurant on all standards.

This article is not intended as a review of either restaurant, but as a comparison of the 50 kilometer transition from David Panama to what is being called Gringolandia, Boquete Panama. If a Chinese restaurant opened in David with $5.50 WonTon soup they would be closing or lowering prices in a very short time. The community would not support being raped.

In Gringolandia the results are more mixed, people view the “New Immigrants” here as wealthy fools at best, wealthy targets at worst. Unless you wish Boquete and ultimately most of Panama to become as expensive as North America you must vote now. Vote with your dollars, eat where your Panamanian neighbors eat, send the message to other restaurants that this is not North America this is Panama and charging inflated prices is bad for the economy, bad for Panamanians and in the long term bad for their businesses. Do the same with other gouging merchants. If a price is not marked on an item assume Gringo Bingo, higher for you, just say no and walk away.

To my knowledge two restaurants in Alto Boquete closed in December. Both The Pacifco Deli and La Fogata marketed to the Gringo population, both are gone now. La Fogata had prices low to a gringo, high to a Panamanian, Pacifico was just high. I have no knowledge of why they closed but I will dare to speculate the income did not sufficiently exceed the expenses. If they had adopted a business model targeting more than the tourists and gringo population perhaps the outcome might have been different?

The balance of Ying and Yang is difficult. If you crave a Chinese meal and you are in Boquete driving to David does not make sense, but maybe you can express your shock at the prices and say you would return more often if the costs were more like El Dorado the Yang next door.

The decision is yours, the opinion is mine.

Pizza Quest in David Panama

It is just a short ride downhill from Boquete Panama to David the commercial and governmental center of Chriqui Panama. I drove with a friend in pursuit of a drivers license and after turning in some paperwork were told to return tomorrow, no surprises there. Hunger attacked as we left ATTT in chiriqui mall. I had a lust for Pizza, I recalled Don Ray writing about a new Italian Pizza place in David, we searched it out directly across from Super 99 behind Asa 2, pull into their parking lot.pizza-david-panama2.jpg

It had no sign, It had no name but it did have a wood oven and we ordered a regular pizza. From hand made crust to table in less than 10 minutes and by far the best pizza I have had this side of Napoli in Panama City.

pizza-david-panama6.jpg

If you are in David, have want a Pizza far superior to the competition I have eaten you might want to try one of these.
